"After having completed my BSc at the University of ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ in Biochemistry and Microbiology, I was still unsure whether a career within this field was for me. Since I love ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ, both as a university and as a city, I decided to continue my studies here and opted for the MSc in Human and Molecular Genetics. I chose this course since it gave me the opportunity to carry out my own lab-based research project, and allowed me to gain a better insight into areas of science that I wasn’t necessarily exposed to during my undergraduate degree!"

"Whilst the lecture modules gave me a more in-depth understanding of genetic principles and explored novel therapeutics for various genetic diseases, it was the practical modules I enjoyed the most. Through excellent teaching and the research project, I gained confidence in carrying out different lab techniques to the highest of standards, from protein and DNA isolation to mammalian cell culturing. I was also able to develop my transferable skills, such as time-management, organisation and team-work by working in a small team to identify the role a chromatin-associated protein has in mammalian cells. Additionally, we were given the opportunity to learn clinical diagnostic skills, such as karyotyping, and use these skills in NHS work placements in the ¾ÅÉ«ÊÓƵ Genetic Diagnostic Service – something only available through the Human and Molecular Genetics MSc!"

Whilst my days in the lab have unfortunately come to an end, the skills and knowledge I have gained from this MSc have helped me secure a role in this field, and will hopefully allow me to successfully carry it out!
